Sicily landscape: the Argimusco Plateau

The Argimusco Plateau is located near one of the best towns in Sicily, Montalbano Elicona, Messina, that in 2015 won a prize not just as one the most beautiful villages in Sicily, but in all Italy among several hundreds of villages. A mix of excellent local food due in particular to the production of dairy products and bread, medieval setting and unpolluted air made Montalbano Elicona a place that you don’t have to miss during your Sicilian tour.

Sicily landscape knows at Argimusco a particular and unusual shade, because it’s a sort of park inhabited by big “strange shaped” (and also ambiguous in certain cases) rock formations that seems to be crafted by the hands of our giants ancestors. But even if we, sicilians, love to believe in antique stories and mythology, we have just to acknowledge that nature in Sicily, and in particular in this place, demonstrate to be the only artisan of our beauties.

Once arrived, never mind what did you expected about it, this Sicily landscape will leave you simply speechless! This is why you can feel the strong power of nature and understand how the wind and the rain can realise masterpieces by modelling the stone.

It is commonly though that, thanks to its strategic position in a plateau immersed among the Peloritani and Nebrodi Mountains, it had to be in the past a very appreciated energetic point where they were worshipped the different representation of nature in Sicily as the Sun, for example, that in every hour gives a particular light to this Sicily landscape, but I think that it’s not surprising that the best moment is the sunset!

One of the best views that you can enjoy from Argimusco is Mount Etna, that seems to be very close from there.

So, if Montalbano Elicona is considered one the best towns in Sicily is also due to the presence of Argimusco Plateau, made up by 10 stones that apparently seem to be artificial thanks to their particular forms. In fact, there are an eagle, a pelican, an owl, a snake, a swan and it is said by modern academics that are keeping studying this place that there’s surely a connection between archaeology and astronomy because of the position of the stones that may reflect that one of the constellations present in summer sky. For this reason, this particular and interesting Sicilian landscape is also called “The mirror of the stars”.

The Argimusco Plateau is often improperly known as the “Sicilian Stonehenge”, but it should actually be called the “Sicilian Marcahuasi”, since it has common characteristics of the Peruvian Marcahuasi site.
