Breathe the fresh and pure air in the peaceful hills of the Peloritani Mountains, where the two villages of Gesso Sicily and Castanea delle Furie are facing the archipelago of the Aeolian Islands. The small hamlet of Gesso Sicily is the seat of the Museum of culture and popular music of the Peloritani mountains with a rare collection of ancient musical instruments like the traditional bagpipes (zampogne) used in the past for agricultural and pastoral activities. The museum has a varied exhibition of Pupi Siciliani (Sicilian puppets) and unique art items like sound toys and whistles. There is also a section dedicated to the extraction of gypsum which was the main economical activity till the last century. The majestic Church of Saint Anthony, an extraordinary work of art dating back to the XVIII century, dominates the city center.
Castanea delle Furie is also attractive as a tiny village located in the Peloritani area: this little town takes its name from the chestnut tree vegetation growing in the surrounding area. Be fascinated by the rich and suggestive heritage held in the Mother Church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, the local patron Saint.
