The Regional Museum Maria Accascina was founded in 1806 as Museo Civico, representing today a treasure chest of testimonies of the rich and glorious history of the third largest city in Sicily. Its collections include thematic areas from the Greek-Roman collection, medieval artworks, Renaissance and Baroque sculptures and paintings, up to items produced in contemporary times.
Among them you can appreciate: the precious paintings by Caravaggio The Rising of Lazaro and The Adoration of the Shepards, produced by the famous Italian painter during his staying in Messina between 1608 and 1609, and the wooden Polyptych by Antonello da Messina dating back 1473

The Cathedral Square of Messina is for sure the best-know attraction in the city of Messina. Every day at noon the statues in the belltower offer a unique show that never disappoints the visitors. The interiors of the Cathedral are also worth visiting for its beautiful mosaics and precious artworks.
The Regional Museum of Messina, dedicated to Maria Accascina was founded in 1806 as Museo Civico: during the centuries, it changed its seats up to the current one inaugurated in 2017.
The collections you can admire inside derive from the destroyed churches and buildings that collapsed during the 1908 earthquake, for this reason, this is considered one of the most precious places in Messina, keeping inside the memory and the identity of a city that almost completely changed its face.
