The tour Etna hike from Taormina is the best option for you to explore and to be guided to the discovery of some of the most impressive extinct craters of Mount Etna, formed during the so-called “perfect eruption” of 2002. During this incredible event, the volcano destroyed the tourist station of Piano Provenzana, which was later reconstructed in 2004.
Our hike will start at Piano Provenzana. You will have the peak of the summit craters visible throughout the entire excursion. Take your time to stop now and then during the ascent, until you reach the saponaria fields immediately before the button-hole system of the 2002 craters. Your expert local guide will safely lead you at the discovery of different kinds of lava, while you learn about ancient eruptions and interesting facts about the volcano.

2002 craters:
Did you know that Mt Etna has more than 200 extinct craters on its slopes? With the Etna hike from Taormina you will get the possibility to walk along the rim of the craters formed during the eruption of 2002, known as the perfect eruption.
Views:
Once on top of the craters, if the the air is clear, you will be impressed by the breathtaking view of the Bay of Giardini Naxos and Taormina on the Ionian Sea, the summit of Mt Etna on one side, the nearby mountains on the other.

Hike:
With your expert and local guide, you will start the hike at Piano Provenzana, at 1900 mt above sea level. You will feel like on top of the world while you walk on the lava rocks and take pictures of the lunar landscape, appreciating the contrast between the sky and the barren black lava soil of the craters.

Your guide will give you a comprehensive introduction of Mt. Etna’s formation, and will provide you with meaningful insights on the Europe’s highest active volcano. Learn all about the ancient and more recent eruptions, the local flora and fauna. Find out how local communities were able over the century to adapt to the volcanic context and to protect themselves from the threaten of the lava flows.

From the departure point, you can already admire outstanding views of the imposing mountain and the summit area.
Follow your expert local guide and turn every step into a fascinating discovery, learning about local flora and fauna, and Etna's history, geology, and eruptions. After the initial steep incline, the path will flatten and you will be able to take beautiful pictures of the summital area. After reaching a plateau, you will be hit by the distant view of the craters of 2002. Keep walking until you reach the bottom of them, and hike up to the edge. Here, you will be simply astonished by the depth and extent of the crater.
We will drop you off at your accommodation (departure point) at the end of the tour

Sara and Giuseppe were so AMAZING! They were so knowledgeable and I loved their vibe being that they are cousins. It was a great tour overall but their personalities and personal stories in relation to what we were seeing really made the tour that much more special. It was really cold up on Mt Etna and Giuseppe was so kind as to offer me his coat! Cannot recommend them enough!

Sara & giocomo are STELLAR. We had so much fun hiking mount aetna, eating the BEST canollis I’ve ever had, and seeing some of the most beautiful scenery with really incredible company. We saw the north side of Aetna & the 2002 craters & the alcantara river for lunch.
So beautiful, so much fun, & the guides were just the right amount of content. 6/10 physical fitness level I would estimate as Aetna is of course up hill about 3.25 miles round trip total.
Enjoyed every minute of it and will be back to explore more with Sara & giocomo. 10/10 would recommend this excursion!!!
