The olive oil tour and Etna wine tasting from Taormina is a great experience for those who are interested in exploring the hinterland of Sicily with a focus on the farming production of the area.
Departing from your hotel in Taormina, we will leave the sea behind and start a scenic drive up the hills to reach Mt Etna area. Accompanied by a professional tour guide, you will learn more about the fertility of the lava soil, thanks to which a great variety of fruits and vegetables are produced. However, the most important products are wine and olive oil.
Driving through the lava fields, you will see many olive groves and vineyards, until we reach the first farm, where we will experience the olive oil tasting. Here you will meet the agronomist who will share insight about the different varieties of olives that you can find in this estate. After an explorative olive oil tour across the gardens, you will finally get to taste 3 different olive oils. The agronomist will also give you specific instructions on how to properly taste the oil, accompanied by local bread.
After the olive oil tour, it’s now time to move to a local winery, where we will start our visit, led by the owner. After a first introduction to the history of the winery and the typical Etna cultivars of the area, we will continue with a visit to the fermentation areas and especially to the wine cellar, hosting huge wooden barrels. Finally, you will be accompanied to the restaurant, where you will taste 5 different wines paired with a selection of the best local food: a starter, a bruschetta, a main course, and dessert.
The tour will finish at the starting point in Taormina.

Etna winery tour:
Of course, the other highlight of the tour is for sure visiting the winery based on the slopes of Mt Etna. During the guided visit inside the winery you will learn a lot about the wine production and you will be enchanted by the landscape surrounding you. At lunch, you will get to taste 5 different wines paired with the most delicious Sicilian food, and an expert sommelier will guide you through this sensory experience.

Etna DCO wines:
One of the main interests in the Etna wine tour from Taormina is to understand the strict regulations that the winemakers have to follow in order to have their products recognized by the Consortium of the Etna DCO wines. The lava becomes fertile after hundreds of years thanks to the erosion provided by the elements. Producers around Mt Etna have learnt how to grow the vines on the slopes, building terraces that make quite challenging to take care of the vineyards and harvesting.
Olive Oil Etna DPO:
To produce the Olive oil Etna DPO and to obtain the label producers have to follow strict regulations, requiring a minimum of 65% of Nocellara dell’Etna variety that can be mixed with the 35% of other Sicilian varieties.
